creamMethylsulfonylmethane (MSM) the miracle supplement that can improve gut health, allergies, skin and much more. This is something that has helped me and my family improve our gut health.

What is Methylsulfonylmethane (MSM)?

Methylsulfonylmethane (MSM) is an organic sulfur compound that’s naturally derived during the earth’s rain cycle.  Sulfur is present in many natural unprocessed foods, but it’s quickly lost during the cooking process.  MSM is gaining a lot of attention due to the recent focus on its immense benefits.

The reason so many benefits are attributed to the MSM supplement is that MSM provides biologically active sulfur, which is the fourth most plentiful mineral in the body and needed for many different critical bodily functions every single day.

Benefits of MSM

Improves skin health and complexion

MSM plays a major part in the body’s ability to produce collagen. As an essential ingredient in tissue to hold the human body together, collagen provides structural support and impacts the flexibility and resilience of skin. Sagging skin and wrinkles, as well as dry, cracked skin, are all developed through a loss of collagen.  MSM works together with Vitamin C to build new, healthy tissues.  MSM can normalize collagen formation and radically improve skin health.

Strengthens hair and nails

Collagen and keratin are both vital for the production of healthy hair and nails.  MSM provides the sulfur needed to produce collagen as well as keratin.  MSM has known to contribute to an exceptional thickness of hair and nails.

Detoxifies the body

One of the most important features of MSM is that it makes your cells more permeable.  This means that it allows toxins and metabolic waste products to easily be moved out of the cells, while essential nutrients and hydration can be moved in.

MSM sulfur has a major part in the detoxification process that is needed in your body and is part of one of many antioxidants that your own body produces, one being glutathione. Glutathione (GSH) is an important antioxidant in plants and animals. Glutathione is a molecule that your body produces naturally. If you are lacking in sulfur you cannot make adequate glutathione, which your body requires.

Improves digestive problems like leaky gut

MSM can help rebuild the lining of the digestive tract and lower inflammation/allergic reactions to certain foods. It’s also useful for healing leaky gut syndrome since it can help stop particles from leaching out the gut through small junction openings, where they can enter the bloodstream and ignite an inflammatory response. This is due in part to the sulfur in an MSM supplement, which is important for digestion.

Helps with dysbiosis

Good bacterial flora (probiotics) use sulfur-residue foods to build various naturally occurring body antibiotics to fight infections. Sulfur also competes for binding receptor sites in the mucous membranes of the intestines, thus crowding out parasites (giardia, trichomonads, roundworms, etc).

Helps with fat digestion

Sulfur is involved in the formation of bile acids, which are important for fat digestion and absorption.

Control pH levels

MSM can help stabilize your pH level. It helps to normalize stomach function and prevent overproduction of stomach acids. This also alleviates heartburn and stomach ulcers.

Naturally increases energy

Due to the increased permeability of the cells, less energy is required to deal with the accumulation of toxins.  This results in more energy being redirected towards activity and necessary healing.  Digestion is the biggest energy requirement of the body (Approximately 70-80% of your energy is spent on digestion each day). MSM increases the absorption of nutrients so that the energy expenditure on digestion is vastly reduced.

Heals joint pains

MSM is especially popular as part of an arthritis diet and supplementation plan to treat arthritis or osteoarthritis/degenerative joint disease since it helps form connective tissue and repair joints, tendons and ligaments.

Methylation and MSM

MSM can be used as a methyl donor to help people who have genetic SNPs that affect their methylation. However, it should be used with caution if you have the VDR Taq (+/+) and COM (-/-) mutation.

How to obtain MSM

MSM can be purchased in powder form, supplement capsules or cream form.  For best results using the MSM powder, add it to your water along with a botanical source of vitamin C.

I use NowFoods MSM. MSM cream or gel is readily absorbed by the skin and has been great on my daughter’s skin

MSM occurs naturally in the human body as a result of the food we eat. It is a normal component of fresh fruits, vegetables, seafood, and meat. However, Food refining and processing removes MSM. When we process our foods with heat or drying, we lose most of the MSM that is vital to our body. Thus, supplementing with MSM is vital.

I have used MSM as a methyl donor, for both my children who have methylation issues. I have seen an immense improvement in their skin, digestion, and overall wellbeing. It definitely has lived up to its name as a “Miracle Supplement”.

I’m so glad I read through this article. I now understand my daughter’s condition..She suffers from severe constipation and stomach cramps
Certain foods make her ear lobes red and hot. No doctor has diagnosed her condition. I’m certainly going to try this miracle medicine.

Melissa David, red ears are often the result of salicylate intolerance. This can be due to oxalate toxicity, and MSM is very useful in dealing with oxalate problems. The Trying Low Oxalate (tlo) Facebook group is immensely helpful to navigate addressing all the many issues oxalate toxicity can bring about.

I encourage you to do some reading on salicylate sensitivity and oxalate toxicity.
