Your voice is an instrument, and just like any instrument, you must take good care of it. If not, then you might end up damaging it in ways that can make it difficult to repair and improve.

Several common, everyday habits gradually damage your voice over time if you’re not careful. Here are the six everyday habits to be aware of that might have a real impact on your voice health.

1. Chronic dehydration

If you’re not drinking enough water, then this might be a primary cause of vocal strain. The vocal folds are something that requires a protective layer of mucus to vibrate properly and to avoid any friction.

When you’re dehydrated and not drinking water, the mucus layer ends up thinning and this can make your vocal cords more prone to irritation and injury.

2. Shouting and yelling

Forcing your voice by yelling or shouting can put a lot of strain on your vocal folds. Especially when it comes to noisy environments where you’re trying to get your voice heard from one end of the room to another.

This forceful impact can often lead to vocal fatigue and even long-term vocal problems. A voice disorder treatment might often be required for those who have had problems with their vocal health in general.

3. Frequent throat clearing

Frequent throat clearing often happens when it’s compulsive and something that you do out of habit. Aggressively clearing your throat is like slamming your vocal cords together, and so if it’s being done repeatedly, it can cause a lot of irritation and damage over time.

Instead, you should be taking a small sip of water to help clear your throat.

4. Lack of sleep or rest

Physical fatigue can often have a direct and negative impact on your vocal function. Not getting enough rest can also inhibit full vocal function. As such, it can lead to vocal fatigue and damage when you are using your voice extensively and not getting the rest you need in between.

Getting plenty of rest and sleep in general can truly help to improve your vocal health.

5. Smoking and exposure to smoke

Both active and passive smoke inhalation can irritate and dry out the sensitive tissues of the vocal folds.

As a result, this can lead to reduced vocal quality and can also lead to a serious risk of health conditions like vocal cord cancer and other cancers in general. It’s always best to avoid smoking where you can.

6. Excessive whispering

Whispering actually puts a lot of strain on the voice, than speaking in a normal conversational volume. That might surprise people to know this information, but when whispering, the vocal folds are held in an unnatural and partially open position.

This causes friction as air passes through and can do a lot of damage to the voice if done excessively.

To help look after your voice and vocal folds in general, avoid doing the everyday habits above so that it keeps your voice nice and healthy all day long.
