The job of a parent is never an easy one. From the moment your child is born, there is so much to think about and to plan for, and one of the biggest decisions you can help your child make is what to be when they grow up.
That simple question, “what do you want to be when you grow up?”, is likely to be hard for most kids to answer, especially in the earlier years.
The popular answers of ‘fireman’ or ‘rock star’ are always fun, and many kids will go through phases of wanting to take on these roles, but as kids grow into their teenage years and their personalities and interests develop, it is a question that will have a big impact on their life.
Preparing For The Future
The best thing you can do as a parent is to guide them in taking on a job that will not only pay the bills but is a role that will fulfill something deep and meaningful inside of them.
Some kids will be happy to cruise along and get any old job as soon as they graduate, ready to make it on their own in the world, but for other kids, there is a deep need to ‘be something’ and to ‘make a difference’ in the world.
It is for these kids that this article is written, and more specifically the parents of these kids.
Here are seven jobs that your kids could do that will help them find their palace in the world and make a difference for the betterment of humankind.
Family Medicine
There is no doubt that the role of a doctor is going to make a difference to people, it is what doctors sign up for when they take their Hippocratic oath.
Being a doctor is not easy though, it takes a LOT of hard work and a lot of schooling to make it into medicine, and even more if your child wants to specialize in a specific field.
If being a physician is not something your kid wants to do, but they know they want to help people and work in the medical field, then a role as a nurse practitioner could be just the ticket.
Places like Carson-Newman University will guide your kid into the world of medicine and take them from the very beginning right through to being a fully qualified family nurse practitioner, something that will be hugely rewarding to them and the families with whom they will work over the years.
Political Researcher
Most parents would never want to push their kids into a world of politics because it seems so cut-throat and corrupt, but that is where the role of a political researcher comes in.
Political researchers are needed in politics in order to keep politicians in line, to make sure they are making the right decisions and creating the right policies.
In making sure the politicians we vote for are doing things properly, you will see your child make a difference to generations after them by (hopefully) helping to create a better and less corrupt political sphere going forward.
Community Arts Teacher
Art is a wonderful thing; it has been used for centuries as a method of self-expression and an outlet for creativity. Art has also been used as a form of protest, from famous British graffiti artist Banksy to the incredible artwork coming out of the Soviet Union after World War Two.
Community art teaching takes that one step further, by helping people to create the art that they want to create, and as a community art teacher, your kid could be supporting other kids who may be in a less fortunate position than themselves, effectively helping to keep kids off the streets and away from drugs and gangs, all by introducing them to art.
Youth Worker
Riding right on the heels of community art teachers is Youth Workers, who work with a wide range of youths from every background.
Youth work is tough, but it is an incredibly rewarding job that can make a difference to the lives of kids of all ages, and it will enrich the lives of your kids if they take it up as a job.
Be warned, this kind of job is not for the faint of heart, and it is not a job they will be able to go into and leave at the door at 5 pm on a Friday.
Think of Youth Work as more of a vocation than a job.
Specific Tutor
There is no doubt that the role of teachers in society is an important one. Teachers form the minds of generations to come and support the development of the next personalities that will rule the world.
If becoming a standard teacher is not something your child is interested in, being a specific tutor could be a great way to bridge the gap. They will get to work with kids from all backgrounds but in a role that will be focused on a set area such as something academic like English or Math, or even something more creative like musical Instrument tutoring.
International Aid Worker
International aid workers have a difficult job in the world, and working for NGO charities can be low-paid and very challenging.
The bonus with this kind of work is, however, the way they can make a difference in the lives of people in all kinds of situations across the globe.
By delivering aid and working with people who really need help, your child can share their core values of making the world a better place by showing just the smallest amount of kindness to people who may not have had much kindness in their lives.
It could be a dangerous job, but it will be worth it.
Journalist
Why would journalism be on this list? It’s simple, the world needs journalists to investigate and share the stories that matter most.
Thanks to the internet, journalism is faster and better than ever, and it is worth considering a career in journalism if your child likes to be at the beating heart of what is going on all of the time.
