You might broadly enjoy your current paramedic position, but at some point or another, you’ll likely pursue other opportunities. Doing so can bring a wide range of benefits, including boosting your salary and achieving greater job satisfaction.
And happily, paramedics who do decide that they’re interested in a new challenge should find that there are plenty of opportunities on the table. There’s already strong demand for paramedics, and thousands of jobs are expected to open up in the coming years.
The question is, how do you know when it’s time to embark on a new paramedic role? We’ve put together a few telltale signs that should help to make your decision more straightforward.
You Want to Step Into Leadership Roles
In many instances, paramedics can begin their journey into more senior, leadership roles while in their current role. However, that’s not always the case. If your current organization doesn’t offer a pathway to a management position, doesn’t provide mentorship or leadership programs, or you simply don’t believe the organizational structure is the right place for your type of leadership, then it’ll be worth exploring new roles.
You Want to Work In New Environments
Even though there are overlapping traits that unite all paramedic roles, the jobs themselves can be significantly different depending on a number of factors, including the environment in which the job takes place. If you’ve been growing a little tired of working in your current environment, then it might be time to explore new opportunities, such as undertaking a paramedic program that’ll have you working at sporting events and concerts. That can provide a much different experience compared with 911 emergency callouts. Other options include working in remote corporate environments, such as on oil rigs and construction sites, or on a cruise ship.
You’re After Better Work-Life Balance
You might love working as a paramedic, but that doesn’t necessarily mean that you want it to be your entire life. Many paramedic jobs offer poor work-life balance, and that can be good grounds for switching to a new job, especially if you wish to spend more time with your family. Choosing to work as a paramedic for events, providing interfacility transport support, or working in an industrial setting can all provide much better working hours and flexibility compared with working in a busy urban environment.
You’re Eager to Relocate
It’s a big old world out there, and a desire to explore it can be all the motivation a paramedic needs to seek new opportunities. Many countries offer skilled worker visas that include paramedics, and that can make it much easier to move abroad. Some common destinations for paramedics looking to move overseas include New Zealand, Australia, the USA, and the Middle East. Do that, and not only will you find that you’re taking on a new professional challenge, but that you’re also taking on a new personal challenge, too. Everyone should live overseas at least once in their life, and as a paramedic, you have the perfect opportunity to do so.
