In today’s market, almost every crib mattress claims to be “breathable.”
But what if that word doesn’t mean what parents think it means?
We sat down with the team behind Numu Air to talk about why most “breathable” mattresses still fall short, and why they chose to take a completely different approach.
“Let’s start from the beginning, how did Numu Air actually come to life?”
Numu Air:
“It didn’t start as a business idea. It started as a real need.
One of our founders had newborn preemie twins, and like many parents, he became deeply aware of the risks associated with sleep, especially concerns around SIDS.
They were looking for a mattress that would allow as much airflow as possible, something that would reduce risk, not just claim to.
But the more they searched, the more they realized that everything on the market still relied on the same basic structure, a core. Even if it was labeled ‘breathable,’ it still had material inside that traps exhaled gases, particularly CO2.
That’s when the question shifted from ‘which mattress is better?’ to ‘why do they all have the same limitation?’
From there, it became a process of research, testing, and rethinking the entire concept from the ground up.”
“Let’s get into that. What’s actually wrong with ‘breathable’ mattresses on the market?”
Numu Air:
“Most of them are built around the same idea: a core made of fiber or some kind of porous material.
The industry message has been that if some air can pass through the material, that’s enough. But here’s the issue, a core is still a core.
It traps exhaled gases and does not allow enough clean air to go through.”
“So ‘breathable’ doesn’t necessarily mean true airflow?”
Numu Air:
“Exactly.
Fiber doesn’t mean open. It just means some air can move through something, not freely or without areas where it can get trapped.
And when airflow is restricted, even slightly, exhaled air can linger longer than it should, allowing CO2 levels to build up to potentially harmful levels.
“So what did you decide to do differently?”
Numu Air:
“We stopped trying to improve the airflow in the core.
Instead, we removed it entirely.
No fiber. No polymer. No internal structure. Nothing inside that can hold or slow down air.
We replaced the entire concept with a high-tension mesh system, a net surface that supports the baby, with nothing underneath but open air.”

“That’s a pretty radical departure from the category.”
Numu Air:
“It is.
Because we weren’t interested in being ‘more breathable’ than other mattresses.
Because our sleep surface is 99% air, breathing through it comes much closer to breathing freely without a mattress beneath the baby.
“And what does that change in real terms?”
Numu Air:
“It changes everything.
- There’s no internal space for exhaled CO₂ to pool.
• Airflow isn’t filtered, slowed, or redirected, it’s fully open.
• There’s no core to trap heat, moisture, or allergens.
Most ‘breathable’ mattresses still rely on materials. We rely on their absence.”

“Parents might wonder, is it actually comfortable? Doesn’t it feel too ‘airy’ or even cold?”
Numu Air:
“That’s a great question, and one we hear often.
The mesh may sound minimal, but it’s engineered to be both supportive and comfortable. It is manufactured by two expert producers in Japan and Switzerland. It flexes just enough to adapt to the baby’s body while still maintaining a firm, safe sleep surface.
As for temperature, airflow doesn’t mean cold. It means balance. Instead of trapping heat like traditional cores, the mattress helps regulate temperature naturally.
Babies don’t get that heat buildup, but they also don’t get cold. It creates a more stable sleep environment overall.”

“With so many ‘breathable’ mattresses on the market, how do you reach the average American parent today?”
Numu Air:
“We made a very deliberate decision from the start, to build the best product we possibly could.
That means investing heavily in the things that actually matter: the engineering, the materials, the airflow performance, and the overall safety of the design. To reach that level, you have to commit real resources.
We don’t have the massive marketing or PR budgets that some of the bigger brands do, and we’re okay with that. That was never the goal.
What we do have is a product that solves the problem in a fundamentally different way.
We’ve also been around for over 15 years, with parents using our products across different parts of the world.
Today, more than 60,000 parents are already using numu, and most of our growth comes from word of mouth.
At the end of the day, when parents trust something enough to recommend it to other parents, that’s what really drives us forward.”

“So what are parents really getting here?”
Numu Air:
“They’re getting clarity.
Not a promise that something is ‘more breathable.’
But a design where there’s simply nothing inside the mattress that can interfere with airflow.
And when you remove the thing that causes the problem, you don’t need to manage it anymore.”
Final Thought
For years, parents were told to look for breathable materials.
But maybe the real question is simpler:
Is there anything inside the mattress that could still get in the way of air?
